Weapon of choice: Two-Handed Sword (Bowling Bash) for high-rate servers; Spear (Brandish Spear) for WoE map control.
Core skill: Two-Hand Quicken 10 gives a free 30% ASPD boost — never skip it on a sword build.

Knight & Lord Knight: Role Overview

The Knight is Ragnarok Online's definitive frontline class — the player who walks into enemy territory first and soaks damage while dealing it back. After rebirth, the Lord Knight becomes one of the highest-damage melee classes in Pre-Renewal, with a broader HP pool, Parry, and the iconic Berserk skill that lets you trade survivability for raw offensive output.

On private servers — especially high-rate ones with boosted EXP and drop rates — Knights and Lord Knights are among the most popular choices because:

  • They are easy to gear on a budget (solid performance from Khalitzburg Cards alone).
  • They thrive in both solo grinding and party play.
  • They are mandatory in War of Emperium (WoE) guilds as castle breakers and door tankers.
  • Whether you are brand new to private servers or a veteran looking to refine your stats, this guide covers everything from first-job allocation to Lord Knight endgame.

    Stat Breakdown

Understanding what each stat does for a Knight lets you make deliberate build decisions rather than copying a template blindly.

    STR — Strength

The primary damage stat. Every 10 STR adds a flat ATK bonus and slightly increases carry weight. At 99 base STR you will feel the biggest spike in auto-attack and Bowling Bash damage. On high-rate servers where gear is accessible, pushing STR to 99 first is almost always correct.

    VIT — Vitality

Each point of VIT increases max HP and HP recovery, and reduces the duration of status effects (Stun, Stone Curse, Sleep). VIT is the survival stat that defines how long you last in WoE or against MVP bosses. Every 2 VIT adds 1% resistance to status effects. At VIT 80–100 you become significantly harder to kill and nearly immune to Stun.

    AGI — Agility

Raises ASPD and the Flee rate. Knights generally do not need AGI because Two-Hand Quicken already covers the ASPD requirement for Bowling Bash spam, and Flee is irrelevant for a tanking class. Leave AGI at base (1) in most builds.

    DEX — Dexterity

Reduces cast time (not a concern for Knights since most skills are instant) and increases HIT accuracy. You need enough DEX to reliably hit your target monsters without missing. On most Pre-Renewal servers, 30–40 DEX is the sweet spot — enough to hit high-Flee monsters without sacrificing STR or VIT.

    INT — Intelligence

Useful only if you are using Spear Stab or relying heavily on Magic-type builds, which Knights are not. Keep INT at base (1).

    LUK — Luck

Influences critical rate and Perfect Dodge. A few private servers run custom crit Knight builds (STR 60 / LUK 60), but these are niche. Standard builds ignore LUK entirely.

Build 1 — STR Damage Build (High-Rate Farming)

    Stats at 99/70 base/job:

    StatBaseBonusTotal
    STR99+varies~120+
    VIT30+gear~50
    AGI11
    DEX30+gear~50
    INT11
    LUK11

Best for: High-rate servers (500x–5000x EXP) where you want to grind Anolian, Magma Dungeon, or Glast Heim quickly. Bowling Bash with a Two-Handed Sword melts mobs in 1–2 hits at full STR.

Limitation: Low VIT means you will get Stunned and die in WoE without external support.

Build 2 — VIT Tank Build (WoE Frontline)

    Stats at 99/70:

    StatBaseBonusTotal
    STR60+gear~80
    VIT80+gear~100+
    AGI11
    DEX30+gear~45
    INT11
    LUK11

Best for: WoE guilds where your job is to tank the Emperium room door, absorb Asura Strikes and AoE skills, and stay alive long enough for your guild's damage dealers to clean up. VIT 80+ combined with a Poo Poo Hat or Feather Beret makes Stun nearly irrelevant.

Limitation: Lower STR means less damage output. You will not one-shot mobs during normal grinding.

    Build 3 — Balanced All-Round Build

    Stats at 99/70:

    StatBaseBonusTotal
    STR70+gear~90
    VIT60+gear~80
    AGI11
    DEX40+gear~55
    INT11
    LUK11

Best for: Servers where you want to solo grind efficiently but also participate in WoE without being a liability. This build gives you enough VIT to resist Stun and enough STR to kill mobs at a reasonable pace. The best starting point for new players who are not sure which role they want.

Two-Handed Sword vs. Spear: Which to Choose?

This is the defining question for every Knight. The short answer:

  • Two-Handed Sword → Bowling Bash build. BB hits a 3x3 AoE, bounces targets, and with Two-Hand Quicken active you can cast it multiple times per second. It is the highest single-target and burst-AoE skill available and the standard choice for high-rate servers.
  • Spear → Brandish Spear / Spear Stab build. Brandish Spear hits a 7x3 linear AoE, making it excellent for pushing enemies in WoE corridors. Pierce ignores the DEF of large monsters, making it powerful against specific MVPs. The tradeoff: lower single-hit damage compared to a 2h sword and no Two-Hand Quicken equivalent.
  • Rule of thumb for private servers: Start with Two-Handed Sword. Switch to Spear if your guild specifically needs a corridor controller in WoE or if you are targeting large-type MVPs like Orc Lord or Stormy Knight.

Bowling Bash10Must-max. Core damage skill. Hits 3x3 AoE; damage scales with ATK and STR.
Brandish Spear10Max if running spear build. 7x3 knockback AoE.
Pierce5–10Useful against large monsters; raise to 10 if farming Turtle Island or Einbroch.
Cavalry Mastery5Required to ride Peco Peco; increases max HP by 25% — worth picking up for survivability.
Peco Peco Ride1Prerequisite for Cavalry Mastery.
Spear Mastery10If running spear build only; adds flat ATK bonus with spears.

    Lord Knight Skills (Rebirth)

    SkillLevelReason
Parry10Sword only. 50% chance to block physical attacks. Extremely powerful in WoE when tanking.

Joint Beat5Chance to break enemy equip slots or inflict various penalties; situationally useful in WoE.
Berserk1Doubles your ATK and ASPD but drains HP to 100 and disables healing. Use only when you want to melt an MVP quickly and have a Priest babysitting you.
Aura Blade5Adds flat damage that ignores DEF — excellent for bypassing high-DEF MVPs or WoE Emperium.
Concentration5Temporarily boosts ATK and HIT; activates Perfect Dodge reduction on enemies. Good combo opener.

WoE Tactics: How to Play Knight Effectively

War of Emperium is where the Knight class truly shines. Here are the key tactical principles:

    1. Castle Breach — Be First Through the Door

Your job during castle entry is to run ahead, absorb the first wave of AoE spells (Storm Gust, Lord of Vermilion), and establish a foothold. Endure prevents knockback, which lets you walk through a Storm Gust without being pushed back. Activate Endure before every door charge.

    2. Bowling Bash Spam in Corridors

Once inside, BB in the 3x3 AoE pattern hits multiple enemies simultaneously and knocks them back, interrupting their skill casts. With Two-Hand Quicken active you can sustain ~3–4 BBs per second. Focus on enemy Priests first — removing their healers collapses the defence.

    3. Emperium Room Tanking

If your guild reaches the Emperium room, a VIT tank Knight stations at the inner door to hold back enemies while damage dealers attack the Emperium. Use Provoke on entering enemies to reduce their DEF and draw aggro. Parry proc at 50% means you effectively halve physical damage taken.

    4. HP Management

Keep a Yggdrasil Berry stack (at least 5–10 in WoE). Berserk is a WoE liability — never activate it unless the Emperium is at very low HP and you need the kill immediately. Head Crush's Bleeding proc is excellent in narrow WoE corridors where enemies cannot retreat.

    5. Communication

Always be in voice chat or a fast text channel with your Priest. A Knight without a Priest dies in seconds to a coordinated enemy. Call out when your HP drops below 30% and position yourself within Heal range.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Q1: Should I go Knight or Crusader if I want to tank?
Knight tanks harder in offensive terms — higher damage, Parry, and Bowling Bash crowd control. Crusader (and Paladin) offers better passive HP, Shield skills, and Gospel support. If you want to be the guild's aggressive frontline fighter, Knight/LK is the answer. If your guild needs a shield-up buffer, consider Crusader/Paladin instead.

Q2: Is Two-Hand Quicken worth it if I am using a spear?
No. Two-Hand Quicken only activates with two-handed swords. Spear builds do not benefit from it, and there is no equivalent ASPD boost for spears. This is the main reason most players choose the sword path.

Q3: What cards should I slot in my weapon for WoE vs. PvM?
For WoE (Demi-Human enemies): Hydra ×2 + Skel Worker gives the highest Demi-Human damage. For PvM (regular mobs): replace one Hydra with the element card that covers your target map's weakness (e.g., Magnolia Card for Wind vs. Water monsters).

Q4: When should I use Berserk?
Only in controlled situations: MVP hunting with a dedicated Priest, or the final push on a nearly-dead Emperium. Berserk drains you to 100 HP and makes you unable to receive heals — in WoE this almost guarantees death if any enemy AoE catches you.

Q5: What is the minimum VIT to be Stun-resistant in WoE?
Stun resistance in Pre-Renewal is calculated as VIT/100 chance to resist. At VIT 50 you have roughly 50% natural resist; at VIT 80 with an Orc Hero Card headgear you achieve near-immunity. For reliable WoE performance, aim for VIT 80 base minimum or compensate with an Orc Hero Card.
